Can't launch PageWright?

Updated May 12, 2026

You're almost there. Nearly every "can't launch" issue comes down to one of three things below — and each takes less than a minute to fix. Find the section that matches what you're seeing.

Fix 1: "Windows protected your PC" warning

This is the most common one. When you double-click the PageWright installer, Windows shows a blue box that says:

"Windows protected your PC. Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting."

The fix (15 seconds)

  1. Click the small text that says "More info" in the blue box.
  2. A "Run anyway" button will appear at the bottom. Click it.
  3. The installer will start. Follow the prompts as normal.

Why this happens: Microsoft's "code signing" certificates cost several hundred dollars per year, and brand-new certificates have to build up a reputation by being downloaded thousands of times before Windows stops warning about them. As a small independent publisher, PageWright is in that reputation-building phase. The warning isn't telling you something is wrong with the file — it's telling you Windows doesn't recognize the publisher yet.

Is it actually safe? Yes. PageWright is open about who builds it (FifthWhy, LLC, Wisconsin) and you can review the full source code on the project's website. The "Unknown publisher" label means "no expensive certificate," not "no known author."

Fix 2: Your browser blocked the download

Chrome and Edge sometimes flag downloaded .exe files even before you run them. If the download didn't complete, or you see a warning like "this file is not commonly downloaded," try the steps below.

Chrome

  1. Look at the bottom of your browser window — or click the download icon (a downward arrow) in the top-right toolbar.
  2. Find the PageWright file in the list. It may say "PageWright Setup … is not commonly downloaded."
  3. Click the small arrow or three-dot menu next to the file, then click "Keep" (or "Keep anyway").
  4. Now double-click the file to run it.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Click the download icon in the top-right of the browser.
  2. Hover over the PageWright file in the list. Click the "…" menu that appears.
  3. Choose "Keep", then on the next prompt click "Show more""Keep anyway".
  4. The file is now in your Downloads folder. Double-click it to run.

Fix 3: Your antivirus quarantined it

Some antivirus programs (Avast, AVG, Norton, McAfee, Bitdefender, Malwarebytes) are extra cautious about unsigned installers and may move the PageWright file to "quarantine" before you can run it.

The fix

  1. Open your antivirus program.
  2. Look for a section called "Quarantine," "Virus chest," "Detection history," or "Threats."
  3. Find PageWright in the list and choose "Restore" or "Allow."
  4. If your antivirus offers it, add PageWright to an "exception" or "allowlist" so it's not blocked again.
  5. Run the installer.

If your antivirus is unfamiliar, search the web for the name of your antivirus plus "restore from quarantine."

Other things to try

The installer finished, but I can't find PageWright

Open the Start Menu (press the Windows key) and type PageWright. It should appear at the top. You should also have a PageWright shortcut on your Desktop. If not, the app is installed at:

C:\Users\<your-name>\AppData\Local\Programs\pagewright\PageWright.exe

The app launches but closes immediately

This is rare. Try these in order:

I'm on Mac or Linux

PageWright currently ships as a Windows app, but it also runs on Mac and Linux through Node.js. See the User's Guide, Chapter 1 for the Node.js setup steps.
